Easy Homemade Ice Cream

Easy Homemade Ice Cream

In our household when our boys decide they want to try something new most of the time Urban and I are supportive and behind them.  Two weeks ago my 7 year old decided he wanted homemade ice cream.  Two problems we are not the owners of an ice cream maker and really it just sounds like a lot of work.  Hello ice cream isle much easier.  After three different recipes, yes three.  I found a very easy homemade ice cream recipe that I had to share.

But first we had to purchase an ice cream maker.  We found one pretty cheap on Amazon you can purchase the same one we did here.  Back to the story.  My husband grew up on a farm where almost everything was homegrown, including the ice cream.  Mom was definitely the last one to get on board with this.  Last week we got the ice cream maker in the mail and over the weekend we did nothing but make different batches of ice cream.

Homemade ice cream can have eggs in it???

The hardest process was finding a recipe that would work.  Eggs? That was the first attempt.  Yes it was yummy but who wants to cook ice cream?  Not this mom.  Next up….I can’t remember it tasted the same though.  The final attempt was a winner.  My youngest son is lactose intolerant regular ice cream makes him sick and guess what homemade ice cream didn’t.  Um, guess there is a really good reason this recipe will be a keeper.

This recipe will make 1 gallon of ice cream.  With only five ingredients it really was fast.  Homemade ice cream is not cheap I think it ended up costing around $9.

But it was for the experience right?

My kids loved it.  I will say after making it and waiting and waiting and waiting more 🙂  They only lasted maybe five minutes during this process.

After adding the ice to the ice cream maker and watching it make noise for a couple of minutes they were done.  It went something like this.  Hey dad–yell when it’s done 🙂  Remember it’s for the experience.  We did this for the first time Friday evening and five days later they are still talking about.  And contemplating different flavors.  Next up is chocolate and strawberry.

For now here is the recipe for easy VANILLA homemade ice cream.

2 quarts half and half cream
1/2 pint heavy cream
1 1/2 cups white sugar
5 teaspoons of McCormick Vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt

Get a big bowl.  I mean REALLY big.  I used a 32 cup Tupperware bowl for this step.  Mix all the ingredients together until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Pour into the ice cream maker’s container and mix according to the manufacturer’s instructions.  We mixed ours for 20 minutes and froze for 20 minutes.

After you take it out of the freezer let it stand for five minutes before eating.  We found it gives it a nice soft texture and it is easier to eat.

  • Oh this would hit the spot right now. It’s 92 out! My husband and I both had moms who made homemade ice cream. Can you believe my boys are teens now and we’ve never done this with them? You make me want to go to Amazon and order an ice cream maker!

    • You totally should! It was a great time and if it wasn’t for my son suggesting it we never would have done it.
